The External Supervisor
The external supervisor is a faculty member nominated by the external university to act as the primary supervisor for the student.
Rights of the External Supervisor:
The university will cover the cost of round-trip travel from the external university's headquarters to the university's headquarters. A visiting visa will be issued, and housing, food, and transportation will be provided, subject to the approval of the Vice President for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research.
Obligations of the External Supervisor:
- Providing guidance, advice, and support to the student to achieve academic progress in the following areas:
- Planning the research project.
- Finding relevant literature and resources.
- Providing research techniques.
- Maintaining regular contact and accessibility to the student at suitable times and agreeing with the student on means of communication such as e-mail, telephone, or media conferencing as a substitute for regular face-to-face meetings.
- Agreeing with the student on a comprehensive timetable of objectives and work to be accomplished in different phases of study. These plans should be written and shared with the local supervisor and general supervisor of the JSP.
- Requesting a written draft of the work and providing critical feedback within a reasonable timeframe.
- Informing the student of any inadequacies in their progress or failure to reach an acceptable working standard.
- Advising the student on techniques, methods, and keeping them updated on developments in the research subject.
- Making regular visits to KAU, ideally, twice a year for up to five days per visit to follow up on the student's work and research progress. The supervisor is also required to write a visit report.
- Reporting biannually on the student's progress to the department and to the general supervisor of the Joint Supervision Program. The supervisor is also required to write a report if the student visits the external university.
- Consulting with the student, the local supervisor, and the JSP on all matters related to the progress of the program of study through effective electronic channels.
